Organic Coarse Wheat Bran 5kg For Mushroom Fruiting Block Supplementation

Coarse wheat bran? “Coarse” it is! Ahem. All jokes aside, it’s getting to look like a breakfast factory around here these days, what with all these oats and bran kicking about the place. You wanna help some people out? Buy some of this before that fucker with the big blue hat comes sniffing around the bins again and telling us about the joys of abstinence.

What’s the wheat bran good for? Easy! You mix it with your hardwood, and then all your woodloving species get an extra bit of nutrients as a little pep-up. There’s a great study on it here that shows that although as you add more wheat bran the chances of contamination goes up slightly, adding none at all is by far the worst option and will almost guarantee contamination. It’s likely that adding a reasonable (anywhere from 5% to 15% by weight) amount of wheat bran helps out by giving the mycelium the supplemental elements (nitrogen etc) it needs to outpace any contaminants, which allows it to quickly convert the lignin in the wood into a usable food source and then take over the whole bag. Colonisation is quicker, and yields are bigger: you’d be daft to not to add some. 

So maybe all that bollocks about starting your day with a nice bowl of bran flakes was actually true? Mind blown.

• Cool, dark, dry, probably a cupboard or similar, maybe in a box
