Rye’s got that in abundance, so thanks to modern science we’ve now discovered a staggering two things you can do with rye, you can make it into bourbon to put in a nice drink or you can grow some happy mycelium on it. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eJust to get in front of any little contrarians out there: Bourbon biscuits have \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003enothing\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e to do with rye grain so if you try and bring biscuits up on our helpful \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/myco.chat\/\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eDiscord community\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e\u003cspan\u003e channel then you’ll be soundly mocked by the Rye Crew.  \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWhat do we do with the rye to make it ready to grow mushrooms on? We wash it, then we soak for 24 hours, then we simmer it for a little bit. This makes sure that the grain is a bit easier for the mycelium to access, and helps the rye absorb a bit more moisture. We then put it into either a 4T or a 10T Unicorn bag, depending on how big you want it, and we pressure cook it for 2.5hrs at 15psi so that anything nasty that might have been in there is as dead as fuck. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWhy choose rye for your mushroom grow? It can absorb a fair bit of moisture without bursting, and it’s full of copper, magnesium, various proteins, and B vitamins, which makes sure your mycelium gets the best possible start in life. You might even have mushrooms beginning to grow straight on the plate: yeah, it’s a fun novelty but it’s not actually that useful, and is a bit of a waste of your resources.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAnd that exact scenario is what agar slants were designed to solve! It’s the tried-and-tested \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/mycopunks.com\/products\/potato-dextrose-agar-pda-petri-dishes-for-mushroom-mycelium-cultivation?variant=55459730293117\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003epotato dextrose and yeast extract\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e\u003cspan\u003e combo that everyone knows and loves, with a slightly craftier form. We angle the vials as the agar is poured that’s why it’s called a slant) to create a usable surface area but with a much greater depth that a standard shallow agar plate. There’s the same amount of nutritious agar, but it takes longer for the mycelium to access, which means it’ll stay alive for much longer. The slanted angle also means that any condensation runs down the side of the slant and doesn’t just pool on top of your mycelium, which makes this particular form factor absolutely ideal for long-term fridge storage. Use these, and you can have a whole load of mushroom genetics ready to grow, at the time that suits you best.
